Fishing for swordfish can be a very exciting and rewarding experience. However, before you can start reeling them in, you need to have the right fishing reel for the job. In this article, we will discuss some of the factors you need to consider when choosing a fishing reel for swordfish. We will also provide some recommendations for models that are perfect for this type of fishing. Let’s get started!

Choose Right Fishing Reel For Swordfish

There are a lot of different fishing reels out there on the marketplace, all of them vary in quality and craftsmanship.

Choosing a fishing reel for swordfish should be one of your top considerations as a fisherman because you need a sturdy rod and a dependable reel to catch this big fish. You can’t just simply pick any old cheap reel and expect it to reel in a swordfish.

Being that I want you to be able to catch as many as possible, choose the best! I’m going to show you some different kinds of fishing reels that you can use for catching swordfish and also what brands are out on the market right now which will give you a better idea of what kind of reel you will want to purchase.

There are basically four types of fishing reels for swordfish – conventional, fly reel, spinning reel and baitcasting reel.

Here’s a brief explanation of the different types of fishing reels that you can use to catch swordfish:

Reel For Swordfish

Conventional Reel

This is your basic fishing reel that is attached to a rod. It consists of a spool to which you can attach your fishing line to and it usually sits on the side of the rod.

Fly Reel

Has a level wind mechanism that will make it easier for you to retrieve your line. They also have an anti-reverse handle which means that when the line starts to run out, it automatically turns in the opposite direction.

Spinning Reel

This type of reel is best used for trolling for swordfish because they have a revolving spool and adjustable drag which you can set when reeling in your catch. They also have an anti-reverse handle like fly reels do.

Baitcasting Reel

This type of reel is also best for trolling since it has a level wind mechanism and is usually a bait keeper which you can set to keep the bait in place while trolling.

Now that you have a better understanding of the different types of fishing reels that are available, let’s take a look at some brands that I recommend using when catching swordfish.

Shimano – They are an international fishing tackle company that has been making quality products for over 70 years. I love their reels because of the durability and smoothness when reeling in your catch. You can choose between their Stella, Tiagra, Conventional Series and Saltiga fishing reels to fit your needs.

Penn – One of the oldest manufacturers in fishing reels, they have been around for over 100 years. They are known to be reliable and dependable when it comes to catching larger fish. You can choose from their Fierce, Predator, Force, Pursuit, Ambassador, Victory, Senator series and much more.

Daiwa – Another well-known company that produces quality fishing reels, they have been manufacturing since 1956. What I love about Daiwa is that each reel has a micro-switch drag system that allows you to adjust the drag using your thumb and middle finger. They also have a lube port that keeps your line from twisting. You can choose from their Pro-Spec, Saltist, Lever Drag and Conventional Series for different options.

Calcutta – A newcomer to the fishing industry, this company has been owned and operated by Penn since 2005. You can choose from their Calcutta Conquest and Calcutta Prodigy reels which are good quality and affordable too!

Okuma – This company is another newcomer in the fishing industry that manufactures top-of-the-line fishing rods and reels. They are known to offer great deals on their equipment. You can choose from their Clutch, Team Okuma, Exoskeleton, and Angler Tournament Series.

You’re now equipped with the knowledge on choosing the best reel for swordfish. The different types of reels and brands will give you an idea on what fish reel is best for catching swordfish. With the information that I have given you, you’ll definitely be able to make a wise decision when it comes to choosing your next or first fishing tackle.

Swordfish

Reel Setup For Swordfish

When fishing for swordfish at night, you’ll want to use some heavy tackle. A 50 wide reel is recommended but an 80-yard line and 1 000 yards of the total length are even better! These fish are famous for their blistering runs so be sure not to go any shorter than that – they can really take off quickly if given room to roam about freely in the waterway.

Conclusion

Fishing for swordfish can be a challenge, but with the right reel setup and bait, you’re sure to catch your limit. Once you’ve got all this figured out make sure that your drag setting is on medium so if there are any sudden jerks from big fish they won’t break off. We hope these tips help you feel confident on your next outing on the water and have an easier time catching those pesky “devil fishes”.And lastly, remember that patience is key when fishing.
