A lot of people enjoy trout fishing, but not everyone knows how to choose their bait. The best baits are ones that will attract the largest amount of fish. One type of bait that is popular is worms because they can be found almost anywhere and are inexpensive. Another option is corn kernels. These work well on warm days when the water temperature has risen above 60 degrees Fahrenheit because it attracts minnows which in turn attract trout who feed on them as well as the smaller fish themselves. For those that want a more natural approach to fishing, cheese or salmon eggs also make for a good choice as these types of baits may entice other types of fish as well as trout who might be looking for something different from their usual fare!
Choose Right Baits For Catching Trout
A lot of hunters set out to catch trout with the first thoughts that come to their mind, but end up catching nothing. This is because they are not setting out with a proper plan. It can be very frustrating when you are convinced that there are trout in the stream or river, all you do is try your best, yet fail to catch any. We all know how unsettling it is to catch nothing after hours of fishing. What you need to do is make sure that you choose the right bait for catching trout at any given time, which means that you must be able to identify different types of trout and what they like to eat. You can go out shopping for your favorite type of bait without the proper knowledge of the fish that you are trying to catch. This can be very frustrating because it is not every day that you get the opportunity to go fishing, especially when you happen to live in an area where trout happens to be quite common. You need to do your research well before you set out on your adventure, this way you will know exactly what you need to do.
The type of bait that you choose must be something that the trout will find appetizing. You can start with small fish like minnows, shiners, or any other small baitfish that is common in your area. You can even use worms or leeches, but do not go for large trout because these are very aggressive and will try to get away from you by jumping out of the water. Once they realize that you have hooked them, they will shake their heads back and forth making it difficult for the hook to stay attached to the inside of their mouth. It is recommended that you set out with a few lures and if they do not work, you can always try something else.
The best times to fish are in the early morning and late afternoon when the water is cooler and it is easier for trout to feed. They will be more active in these conditions because their metabolism is faster but do not stop fishing if the sun comes out. If the water is murky, you can always try using a bobber or float to make your bait look more natural. When choosing your lures, make sure that they are about 6 inches long with 3-4 treble hooks depending on how big your trout is, use small minnows for small trout and larger minnows for the bigger ones.
Remember to use a leader when you are using lures because they can damage your line by rubbing against the teeth of the fish that you hooked. This will only make it more difficult for you to land your catch, so be very careful when setting out. Make sure that the hooks are sharp enough for you to catch the fish, but also make sure that they are not so sharp that they will damage their mouth. Try choosing your favorite color lures, some of them have attractant chemicals on them which can help stimulate a bite, but do not always rely on these because trout are very smart and will find ways to avoid them.
Choose the right bait and choose your lures wisely because you do not want to go home empty-handed, but also make sure that you do not hook a fish bigger than what you can handle. It is important that you maintain a certain level of patience when fishing so that you will be able to enjoy yourself and most importantly, catch something.
Best Baits For Trout
While they have their own specific lures that they go crazy over, there are some “universal baits” that are just as effective. Here are my 5 favorite baits for catching trout, followed by some tips for using them to get the best results possible.
Powerbait Trout Bait: This is a fantastic “universal bait” that trout will go absolutely nuts over! You can use it on any type of cast and it will catch their attention immediately.
Nightcrawlers: No self-respecting angler should be without a few packs of nightcrawlers in his or her tackle box. They are easy to use, incredibly effective for getting a strike, and often very large trout. The only downside is that you need to use them with a bobber so they don’t get away.
Salmon Eggs: These are very popular with trout, and if you put one on your hook, you won’t be disappointed! The only problem is that they can be hard to find at times, but when you do happen upon them, they’re worth it.
Powerbait Trout Dough: This is another fantastic product that will guarantee you success. It’s a great bait for trout that are deeper in the water, and the best thing about it is how easy it is to use!
Earthworms: If you can’t find any other baits to use, go with earthworms. They don’t work quite as well as the ones listed above, but they are still effective.
Tip #1: If you’re using worms, try to get nightcrawlers instead of red worms or other types. Nightcrawlers are much bigger than any other type of earthworm and will increase your chances of catching trout in a huge way!
Tip #2: Trout love it when you jig your bait up and down with the line. The more lively and active it is, the more likely they are to bite.
Tip #3: Trout like their baits best if they’re fresh, so keep that in mind as you go fishing for them. Nobody likes smelly or old bait!
What size lures do trout like?
Trout are picky eaters. They will pass over a large volume of small baitfish to focus on the more nutritious few. If you see trout rising, they are probably looking for larger food items like mayflies and stoneflies, though they will also take minnows readily.
There are many things that factor into what size lures a trout will take, from season to preference for larvae or adults.
Trout have a very good sense of sight and smell, making it important to use the appropriate size and color of bait.
What color lures do trout like?
In my opinion, most trout use sight as opposed to smell or sound when feeding during the day. This means they prefer lures without a lot of movement. In my experience, most trout use light from the sky as a source of reflection when looking for food. Bright colors are generally better than dark colors.
Here is a list of colors that work best when fishing for trout:
Red, bright yellow, white, and blue seem to be the most popular colors for trout lures. Remember that bright light coming through the water will make your lure easier to see even if it’s dark in color.
On a side note, I have had a lot of success with silver-colored lures during the day and gold/red/white at night. These colors seem to be less visible in bright light because they don’t reflect as much light when compared to other colors like red or white.
